1:1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timotheus, to the Thessalonian church in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Wishing you grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1:2 We continuously give thanks to God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers;
1:3 Recollecting unceasingly your faithful work, loving labour, and hopeful endurance in our Lord Jesus Christ, before God our Father;
1:4 Recognising, beloved brothers, your chosen status by God.
1:5 For our message of the gospel came to you not merely in words, but also with power, the Holy Spirit, and profound conviction; you know how we lived among you for your benefit.
1:6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, embracing the message amidst much adversity with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.
1:7 Thus, you became a model for all believers in Macedonia and Achaia.
1:8 From you, the Lord’s message rang out not only in Macedonia and Achaia but in every place your faith towards God has spread, so that we need not say anything.
1:9 For they themselves report about our visit to you, how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
1:10 And to await His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.
2:1 Brothers, you know our visit to you was not fruitless:
2:2 But after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God amid much opposition.
2:3 Our appeal does not stem from deceit, impurity, or deceitfulness;
2:4 But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please humans, but God who tests our hearts.
2:5 You are aware that we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover greed—God is our witness:
2:6 We did not seek praise from humans, from you or anyone else, though we could have imposed our weight as apostles of Christ.
2:7 Instead, we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother caring for her children:
2:8 So deeply did we care for you that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our lives, because you had become dear to us.
2:9 Remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; working night and day not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.
2:10 You and God are witnesses of how holy, righteous, and blameless we were among you who believe:
2:11 Just as you know how we treated each of you like a father treats his own children,
2:12 Encouraging, comforting, and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into His kingdom and glory.
2:13 And for this reason, we constantly thank God, because when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which also works effectively in you who believe.
2:14 For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, since you suffered the same things from your own compatriots as they did from the Jews,
2:15 Who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone,
2:16 Preventing us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they might be saved. In this way, they always fill up the measure of their sins, but wrath has come upon them to the utmost.
2:17 But we, brothers, separated from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured more eagerly to see your face with great desire.
2:18 Therefore we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, time and again—but Satan blocked our way.
2:19 For what is our hope, joy, or crown of boasting? Is it not indeed you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?
2:20 Truly, you are our glory and joy.
3:1 Therefore, when we could endure it no longer, we thought it best to be left behind at Athens alone;
3:2 And we sent Timothy, our brother and God’s co-worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you concerning your faith,
3:3 So that no one would be unsettled by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.
3:4 Indeed, when we were with you, we told you in advance that we were going to suffer tribulation; and it came to pass, as you know.
3:5 For this reason, when I could no longer bear it, I sent to find out about your faith, fearing that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labour might be in vain.
3:6 But now Timothy has come to us from you and has brought us good news of your faith and love. He told us that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, just as we long to see you.
3:7 Because of this, brothers, in all our distress and affliction, we have been comforted about you through your faith.
3:8 For now we really live, if you stand firm in the Lord.
3:9 What thanks can we return to God for you, for all the joy we feel before our God because of you,
3:10 Night and day praying most earnestly that we may see your face and supply what is lacking in your faith?
3:11 Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you.
3:12 And may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another and for all people, just as we do for you,
3:13 So that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.
4:1 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus that, as you received instruction from us on how you ought to walk and please God, you would excel still more.
4:2 For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
4:3 For this is God’s will, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;
4:4 That each one of you knows how to control his own body in holiness and honour,
4:5 Not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;
4:6 And that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, as we have previously told and solemnly warned you.
4:7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.
4:8 Therefore, whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives His Holy Spirit to you.
4:9 Now concerning brotherly love, you have no need for me to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love each other.
4:10 And indeed you do practice it toward all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more,
4:11 And to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you,
4:12 So that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
4:13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so also God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
4:15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
4:17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
4:18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
5:1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be written to you.
5:2 For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
5:3 When people say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
5:4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief.
5:5 You are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.
5:6 So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.
5:7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night.
5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
5:9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
5:10 Who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with Him.
5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
5:12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labour among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,
5:13 And to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
5:14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
5:15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.
5:16 Rejoice always,
5:17 Pray without ceasing,
5:18 Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
5:19 Do not quench the Spirit.
5:20 Do not despise prophecies,
5:21 But test everything; hold fast what is good.
5:22 Abstain from every form of evil.
5:23 And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5:24 He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.
5:25 Brothers, pray for us.
5:26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
5:27 I adjure you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the brothers.
5:28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
