Saint Theoctistus (d. 451) was a great ascetic who withdrew from the world and took refuge six miles outside of Jerusalem at the Lavra Pharan monastery. There he enclosed himself in a cell and devoted himself to the strictest ascetic struggles. During this time, the eminent Euthymius also came to reside in a neighboring cell at the Lavra.
The Call to Asceticism: Theoctistus and the Lavra Pharan Community
In his youth, Theoctistus felt an undeniable call from God to devote his life fully to spiritual pursuit. Leaving worldly affairs behind, he journeyed into the Judaean wilderness outside Jerusalem to the monastery known as Lavra Pharan. At this remote and austere site, Theoctistus enclosed himself in a small cell, committing to perform the strictest ascetic struggles. He focused intensely on prayer, manual labor, fasting, and transcending earthly desires.
During this fertile time in the Lavra’s history, another ascetic named Euthymius arrived, occupying the neighboring cell. A kindred spirit who shared Theoctistus’ fervent quest for God and zeal for self-denial, a close bond quickly formed between the pair. Each year after celebrating the Feast of Lights, they would retreat farther into the barren wastelands, intensifying their spiritual trials and bodily mortifications before returning for Palm Sunday rites, when the Lavra’s community would come together.
After five years living as Lavra’s solitary hermits, Theoctistus and Euthymius reached a turning point. Their reputations for profound sanctity had spread, and many traveled great distances, aspiring to live under their guidance. Thus, the two saints established the first coenobitic monastery in the Judaean desert – a new order based on their teachings that attracted scores of disciples. Leading this community as abbot until his death in 451 at a ripe old age, Theoctistus left an enduring legacy. His inspirational life remains a powerful reminder that through sacrifice and tireless striving, divine union can be attained.
